The source areas
The source areas are configured as sinuous channels adjacent and hydraulically connected to the natural water courses, realized in such a way as to slow down the flow of water and allow the formation of the optimum for reproduction "in situ" of the crayfish (absence of predators, access impossible for poachers, slow water flow, roosts, etc..). Following mating, the source areas constitute the "nursery" for juveniles, then allowing them the input, natural and autonomous, into the connected water bodies.
This is an experimental actions, that reproduce habitats existing in nature and rich in crayfish, never performed before in any project on the protection of the species. The goal is then to artificially reproduce those existing environments and especially to assess their effectiveness and transferability in other areas.
The project will provide for 3 source areas, 2 in the Abruzzo region and 1 in the Province of Isernia.
